LRIS – Marine Services Welder Qualification Certificate Test
In short: A Lloyds welding certificate is a welder qualification issued by Lloyds Register (LR) through its Indian services arm, LRIS, after an authorised surveyor witnesses your weld test and accepts the results. At Apeiwtes AWS Technology Center in Vasai (E), Mumbai, we prepare the welder, provide the test booth, machines, consumables and coupons, and coordinate the surveyor visit. The certificate is normally valid for two years with continuity records.
Quick facts
- Where: Mahalaxmi Industrial Estate, Vasai (E), Vasai-Virar, Thane-Palghar 401208. Welders come to us from Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Thane, Vasai-Virar, Nalasopara, Palghar, Bhiwandi and Boisar.
- Also known as: Lloyd welding certificate, Lloyds Register welder qualification, LR welding certificate, LRIS marine welder certification.
- Positions: 1G to 6G, on plate and pipe. The Lloyd 6G certificate is the all-position pipe test most shipyards ask for.
- Processes: SMAW (stick), GTAW (TIG), GMAW and FCAW (MIG/MAG and flux-cored), and SAW.
- Materials: mild and carbon steel, stainless steel, duplex, Inconel, marine-grade aluminium.
- Codes applied: LR Class Rules, ASME Section IX, AWS D1.1, ISO 9606 and ISO 15614, IACS guidelines.
- Who issues the certificate: Lloyds Register via LRIS, after its surveyor witnesses and accepts the test. We are the test facility and training provider, not the certifying body.
- Fees: quoted per welder on request, because cost depends on process, position, material, thickness and the NDT required. Call +91 8169178256 or message us on WhatsApp.
How to get a Lloyds welding certificate, step by step
- Confirm the scope. Tell us the process, position, material and thickness range your employer or project needs. We confirm the applicable WPS and exactly what the certificate will cover.
- Preparation. If you want practice first, you weld on the same machines, material and joint setup the test will use, supervised by Mr. Prakash Jadhav, our founder and an AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) with over 26 years in welding inspection.
- Test coupon. On test day you weld the coupon in the booked position, to the WPS, in front of the LRIS surveyor.
- Visual inspection. Surface finish, bead profile and alignment are examined first.
- NDT and destructive testing. Depending on scope: radiographic (RT) or ultrasonic (UT) testing, liquid penetrant (LPT) or magnetic particle (MPT), plus bend, tensile, macro or fracture tests.
- Certificate. Once the surveyor accepts the results, LRIS issues the welder qualification certificate listing your details, the WPS number, the process and positions qualified, base and filler metals, and the thickness and diameter range.
Who should get certified, and what to bring
This certificate suits welders working in shipyards and dry docks, offshore oil and gas platforms, and marine piping or structural fabrication, as well as contractors who need class-approved welders for a tender or audit. An ITI welding trade certificate helps but is not compulsory.
Bring a government photo ID, passport-size photographs, any previous welder certificates you hold, and your own safety shoes. Machines, electrodes, coupons and PPE are available at our centre.
For companies certifying a batch of welders
Shipyards and fabricators across Maharashtra send welders to us in groups against a project requirement. Where sending everyone to Vasai is impractical, the test can be arranged at your own premises with the surveyor attending your site.
🌐 About LRIS (Lloyd’s Register – Indian Services)
Lloyd’s Register (LR) is one of the world’s leading classification societies, based in the UK, with a long-standing reputation for setting high standards in marine, offshore, and industrial safety.
LRIS (Lloyd’s Register – Indian Services) is the Indian arm of LR, offering inspection, certification, and verification services in line with international standards.
LRIS certification is highly respected in:
- Shipbuilding & Repair
- Offshore Platforms
- Marine Equipment Fabrication
- Oil & Gas Structures
- Heavy Engineering and Power Plants
🧰 What is the LRIS Welder Qualification Test?
The LRIS Welder Qualification Certificate Test is conducted to verify that a welder has the required skill to produce welds of acceptable quality, as per LR Class Rules and applicable international welding standards (such as ASME Sec IX, AWS D1.1, ISO 9606).
The welder must perform a test weld using a pre-approved Welding Procedure Specification (WPS), and the results must meet strict acceptance criteria.
📚 Applicable Welding Standards
The welder qualification is performed in accordance with:
- LR Rules for the Manufacture, Testing, and Certification of Materials
- ASME Section IX
- AWS D1.1
- ISO 9606 / 15614
- IACS (International Association of Classification Societies) guidelines
🛠️ Welding Processes Covered
Welders can be certified under various processes including:
- SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding)
- GTAW (TIG Welding)
- GMAW (MIG/MAG Welding)
- FCAW (Flux-Cored Arc Welding)
- SAW (Submerged Arc Welding)
🔍 Test Coupon & Conditions
- Material Types: Mild Steel, Stainless Steel, Duplex, Inconel, Marine Aluminum

- Shipyards and dry docks
- Oil & gas offshore platforms
- Marine piping and structure fabrication
- Contractors needing certified welders for class-approved projects
- Welding professionals aiming for export or international marine work
📍 Where to Take the Test?
Welders in the Mumbai region usually take one of three routes:
- At our Vasai (E) centre. You book a slot, we arrange the surveyor visit, and you test on our machines. This is the normal route for individual welders.
- At your own facility. Arranged for companies qualifying several welders at once, with the surveyor attending your premises.
- Through your employer. Shipyards and fabricators send welders to us in batches against a project requirement.
Frequently asked questions
What is a Lloyd 6G welding certificate?
6G is a pipe test welded at a fixed 45-degree inclined angle, so the welder passes through flat, vertical and overhead positions in a single coupon. A Lloyd 6G certificate therefore qualifies the widest range of pipe work, which is why shipyards and offshore contractors ask for it specifically.
How long does the Lloyds welder qualification test take?
The welding is normally finished in a day. NDT, destructive testing and the surveyor sign-off mean the certificate usually reaches you within one to two weeks.
How much does a Lloyds welding certificate cost in India?
There is no single price. Cost depends on the process, position, material, thickness and whether radiography is required. We quote per welder once the scope is known. Call +91 8169178256 for a figure for your case.
How long is the certificate valid?
Normally two years. It stays valid only while continuity is maintained through a logbook or client endorsement confirming regular welding with that process. After an extended break, or a failed performance check, a re-test is required.
What is the difference between LR, LRIS and Lloyds Register?
They refer to the same organisation. Lloyds Register (often written LR) is the UK classification society; LRIS is its Indian services arm, which conducts surveys and issues certificates in India. A certificate issued through LRIS is a Lloyds Register certificate.
Do I need an ITI certificate to appear?
No. An ITI welding trade certificate is useful but not compulsory. Practical skill in the position being tested is what decides the result.
Should I take Lloyds, DNV, ABS or IRCLASS?
Whichever classification society classes the vessel or structure you will work on. The test method is broadly similar; the issuing body and acceptance criteria differ. Send us your employer requirement and we will tell you which applies.
