Ship Marine Welding Training – Complete Overview
In short: Our marine welding course in Mumbai trains welders for shipbuilding, ship repair and offshore fabrication, and ends in a recognised welder qualification certificate from DNV, ABS, Lloyds Register or IRCLASS. Training is hands-on at our Vasai (E) workshop in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, on the same machines and joint configurations used in the actual test.
Course at a glance
- Where: Mahalaxmi Industrial Estate, Vasai (E), Vasai-Virar, Thane-Palghar 401208. Trainees travel to us from Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Thane, Vasai-Virar, Nalasopara, Palghar, Bhiwandi and Boisar.
- Who it is for: welders with some hands-on experience who want shipyard, dry dock or offshore work; fitters moving into welding; and company batches sent by fabricators.
- Eligibility: basic welding ability. An ITI welding trade certificate helps but is not compulsory.
- Processes taught: SMAW (stick), GTAW (TIG), GMAW and FCAW (MIG/MAG and flux-cored), and SAW for structural work.
- Positions: 1G through 6G, on plate and pipe, including overhead and confined-space practice.
- Materials: mild and high-tensile steel, stainless steel including 316L, duplex, and marine-grade aluminium alloys.
- Duration and batches: set according to your starting skill level and the certificate you are aiming for. Ask us for the current batch dates.
- Fees: quoted on request, because they depend on the processes covered, the duration and which class certificate you take at the end. Call +91 8169178256 or message us on WhatsApp.
- Certification: the course prepares you for the DNV, ABS, Lloyds (LRIS) or IRCLASS welder qualification test. The class society issues the certificate after its surveyor witnesses and accepts your test weld.
Why marine welding is trained separately
Welding on a vessel is not the same as general fabrication. The joint may be overhead, inside a confined compartment, or on a surface that cannot be rotated. The steel is often high-tensile, the structure flexes under load, and every weld has to survive saltwater corrosion for years. Marine welding training exists because the failure modes are different, not because the arc is different.
What the training covers
- Process practice. Running beads in each process you need, on the material and thickness your target certificate covers.
- Position work. Building up from flat to vertical, overhead and finally 6G pipe, which is the position most shipyard employers ask for.
- Codes and WPS reading. Understanding AWS D1.1, ASME Section IX and ISO 9606 well enough to follow a Welding Procedure Specification correctly under test conditions.
- Weld defects and acceptance. Recognising undercut, porosity, lack of fusion and cracking, and knowing what a surveyor will reject.
- Safety. Hot work in confined and enclosed compartments, ventilation, gas safety, fire prevention and correct PPE.
- Corrosion awareness. Surface preparation before coating and post-weld treatment, which is what makes a marine weld last.
- Test preparation. Mock coupons under the same conditions as test day, assessed by Mr. Prakash Jadhav, our founder and an AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) with over 26 years in welding inspection.
Where it leads
Certified marine welders find work as marine structural welders, offshore platform fabricators, pipe welders on marine and offshore piping, and shipyard maintenance technicians, in India and on overseas contracts. We provide placement assistance; we do not guarantee placement, and you should be cautious of any institute that does.
Training at your own yard
For shipyards and fabrication units across Maharashtra, training and testing can be run at your premises instead of ours. This suits batches of welders where releasing everyone to travel to Vasai is impractical.
🔧 What is Ship Marine Welding Training?
Ship Marine Welding Training is a specialized program designed to train welders to work in shipbuilding, marine maintenance, and offshore fabrication. It focuses on welding techniques, materials, and safety practices required in marine environments, where strength, durability, and corrosion resistance are critical.
This training is aligned with global marine certification standards such as:
- DNV (Det Norske Veritas)
- ABS (American Bureau of Shipping)
- Lloyd’s Register (LR)
- IRCLASS (Indian Register of Shipping)
🎯 Objectives of Marine Welding Training
- To develop skilled marine welders capable of working on ships, tankers, submarines, and offshore platforms.
- To ensure welders understand the challenges of marine welding like saltwater corrosion, confined spaces, and dynamic loads.
- To meet classification society requirements for marine welding certification.
- To improve job readiness for work in shipyards and offshore construction projects.

Frequently asked questions
What is the fee for the marine welding course in Mumbai?
Fees are quoted on request, because they depend on which processes you need, how long you train and which class certificate you take at the end. Call +91 8169178256 and tell us your current skill level and target, and we will give you a figure.
How long is the ship welding course?
It depends on where you start. An experienced welder preparing for a specific position test needs far less time than someone building up from flat position. We set the duration after seeing you weld.
Do I need an ITI certificate to join?
No. An ITI welding trade certificate helps but is not compulsory. What matters is that you can already strike and hold an arc; we build from there.
Which certificate will I get at the end?
Whichever classification society your target employer requires: DNV, ABS, Lloyds Register (LRIS) or IRCLASS. The society issues the certificate after its surveyor witnesses your test weld. We prepare you and arrange the test.
Do you provide placement?
We provide placement assistance and share openings from the shipyards and fabricators we work with. We do not guarantee a job, and no honest institute will.
How do I become a marine welder in India?
Build practical welding skill, then qualify under a classification society in the process and position your target employer uses. For shipyard and offshore work that usually means 6G pipe under DNV, ABS, Lloyds or IRCLASS. The certificate is what gets you past the gate.
Can my company send a batch of welders?
Yes. Fabricators and shipyards across Maharashtra send groups against a specific project requirement, either at our Vasai centre or at their own premises.
